I keep hearing that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is going to start a PA program soon. I can’t find any information about it anywhere – do you have any information about UNC-CH’s plans?

    Thanks

UNC is working on a PA program, which is officially “in negotiation.” If you call them they won’t have much information since it really doesn’t officially exist yet. If all goes well, they will have one, but it won’t open until at least 2013 or 2014. If it happens, and it gets ARC-PA acreditation, we’ll definitely add it to our list.

Hey, I was wondering how I would be able to fulfill the patient care experience requirements for Duke’s PA program? Does in-patient volunteering in hospitals count or do I need to work as a nursing aide/medical assistant?

I don’t. Once it is ARC-PA accredited, we will list it.

What is the difference between a certificate and masters program? I noticed only Duke is listed as providing a certificate and a masters

The certificate allows you to practice. A Masters is a graduate degree that most programs offer you at the completion of your schooling. It isn’t required (yet) to become a PA, but the trend is toward PA being a graduate-only education.

UNC-Chapel Hill is working on a Masters of Physician Assistant Studies program. It will be housed in the Allied Health Sciences (AHS) Department of the School of Medicine. They’re hoping to start in 2015. The details of the program have not been determined. They still have to get the program approved by the University and accredited. Once a Program Director has been hired, it will be that person’s responsibility to begin setting up criteria, curriculum, etc.. UNC does have a web site that will be updated as information becomes available – http://www.med.unc.edu/ahs/unc-pa

      Thanks for the tip.

Once they are ARC-PA accredited, they will be added to our directory of programs.

I was just going through UNC’s website and they mention a PA Program, however it appears it’s only avaliable to Veterns and Combat Medics.. Anyone have any information yet? I called UNC School of Allied Health and left a message. When they get back to me I’ll let y’all know. My fingers are crossed that it’s open to everyone.
